The words "cultural festival" do make a feeble attempt towards describing Saarang, but perhaps the word “celebration” more accurately sums up what Saarang stands for. Every January just as India celebrates her Republic Day, IIT Madras wakes up to an extravaganza of colour and energy that lasts for four days and five nights.
First held in the early 1970s Saarang , or Mardi Gras as it was called then , has had a remarkable history. From hosting the legendary Uriah Heep on one of their rare world tours, to giving India some of her most visible rock groups, like the Buddha’s Babies, to rewarding artistes that have become household names today, (A.R.Rahman was a winner at Saarang’s light music contest when he was in college) Saarang has stood for that which , for most of us, makes life truly worth living.
More than 30000 people come together at Saarang every year to celebrate; predominantly among them, students and young professionals between the ages of 15 and 35. We at Saarang believe this offers our partners an excellent opportunity to communicate with a large congregation of people, and render a recall level that simply cannot be achieved my means of the usual channels of media communications.
