Saarang Village

Also new to Saarang this year is the SAARANG VILLAGE.

The Saarang Village is a mini-village that serves as a museum of things culturally and traditionally Indian. The objective of incorporating Saarang Village into Saarang is to introduce students to the cultural diversity that our country offers, from the very roots that our urban lives today are an offshoot of - namely, Village India.

The Saarang Village will be a distinct part of Saarang, yet it will have a separate presence of its own, maintaining the look and feel of an authentic typical Indian village, complete with traditional mud huts, thatched roofs, maintaining the flavour of rural India. The village will be divided on a zonal basis, with separate handicrafts and food huts for North, South, East and West.

The country's regional diversities will be showcased by way of a variety of handicrafts, foods and traditional folk performances representative of their part of the country.

The folk performances promise to be the biggest attraction of the Saarang Village. There will be several authentic folk dances representative of the regions they hail from - for instance, the Peacock dance from Tamil Nadu, the Gidda and Bhangra from Punjab, Kalaripayattu? from Kerala. A large central area of approximately 800 square feet will be cordoned off for the dance troupes.

Various demonstrations and workshops on arts and crafts, like Lac Handicrafts, Palm-leaf engraving, and Terracotta and papier-maché will also present a closer look at the processes that work behind these arts.

Saarang Village will be held on consecutive days, from the 24th to the 27th of January, and will run from 9 am in the morning to 6 pm in the evening. Workshops are scheduled for the mornings, while afternoons and evenings will be taken up by various dance performances. Make sure you don't miss this totally unique cultural experience.
