The famous lines by Wordsworth sum up the essence of Taal, Sur and Lay. ‘Sangeet’ is the melody of life and some one rightly said life is incomplete without Music.

Honestly, we at IITM can’t help but identify with the unforgettable songs written and sung by all the musical geniuses of the past. Who can turn away from the mellifluous delight that Music fills our lives with? The mother’s voice is music to a wailing infant’s ears, the wind, brook, and the waterfalls enrapture the poet, the drums and guitar are to Enrique, what the Tabla, Tanpura and Veena are to Pandit Jasraj. Be it Lata Mangeshkar or Elvis Presly, the do infuse us with unexplainable delight. Our heart beats to the rhythm (Taal), our throat composes the melody (Sur) and our life- it is the song itself. Zapped? Light music, Classical music, Fusion Music, Westerrn music and for the not so faint at heart—Powerchord n Decibels, whatever be its kind, it is all-pervasive, here at Saarang.

Rock Music and IIT Madras go a long way back. Many successful bands such as Moksha who can now brag of being associated with international labels can trace their origins to the western music competition at Saarang. Each year the band that has created the most excitement is showcased at Saarang’s Western Music Night. This year, as all years, bands fight it out for two of the biggest rock competitions in India, Powerchord and Decibels.
